The AKC’s Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) is a 10-item program and a temperament test that focuses on a dog’s manners, basic obedience training, and social skills around people and other dogs:

  1. Accepting a friendly stranger
  2. Sitting politely for petting
  3. Appearance and grooming
  4. Out for a walk
  5. Walking through a crowd
  6. Sit and down on cue/Staying in place
  7. Coming when called
  8. Reaction to another dog
  9. Reaction to distractions
  10. Supervised separation

(see CGC Skills for more details)

I have been an AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator since 2016, and over the years I have been teaching the CGC skills during one-on-one private lessons, group classes, and workshops.

I like the program for a few different reasons (some of which I go over in “Why the CGC?”) but ultimately because I see it making a difference for my clients and their relationship with their dogs.

If you would like to know more about training for it, improving particular items/behaviors, or scheduling a test, we can start with a phone consultation and take it from there!
